Jose Mourinho’s remarks about Vinicius Jr wrong – Ex-South Africa striker Benni McCarthy
Former South Africa forward Benni McCarthy has taken issue with comments made by José Mourinho following Real Madrid’s Champions League victory over Benfica.
The controversy arose after Real Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior reportedly alerted the referee to an alleged racist remark from Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni. The incident is said to have stemmed from Prestianni’s displeasure over Vinícius’ celebratory dance after scoring.
Mourinho, who was dismissed late in the second half, suggested that the Brazilian had shown a lack of respect with his celebrations. In his post-match remarks, he pointed out that Benfica’s most iconic figure, Eusébio, was himself a Black player — a comment that has since drawn criticism.
McCarthy, who worked under Mourinho during their time together at Porto, acknowledged his former coach’s stature but insisted the remarks were ill-judged.
“The situation, he could have handled it better or chosen his words better but emotions got the better of him,” McCarthy, who is the current Kenya head coach told BBC World.
“I know the statement he made was very wrong. But we’re all human, we all make mistakes.”
According to McCarthy, the Portuguese manager has consistently shown respect and support for players from the continent, describing him as one of the most dependable figures an African footballer could work with.
“When it comes from somebody I know personally and I know how he feels about our continent and our people and the players that play for him, he’s the most stand-up guy that any African player will ever play for.
He suggested the comments were made in the heat of the moment and expressed hope that Mourinho would eventually acknowledge any misstep.
“I think it was an emotional decision, tough, where he maybe made a call, and it wasn’t the right call, which he will later, hopefully, come out and say that he made a mistake because that’s what I would like to think, that’s the kind of man he is.”
Meanwhile, both FIFA and UEFA have condemned the alleged incident, with investigations ongoing.
