Jose Mourinho offers Vinicius Junior public show of support after Santiago Bernabeu jeers

Jose Mourinho visibly backed Vinicius Junior after the Real Madrid forward was jeered by sections of the Santiago Bernabeu crowd during the club’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Inter Milan.

Real Madrid began their European campaign with a dramatic win against the Italian side on Tuesday, securing all three points at home in a match that saw the visitors score late in the game.

With Inter Milan having pulled a goal back, Mourinho decided to substitute Vinicius Junior in the 87th minute. The Brazilian had been subjected to whistles from the home supporters during the second half, despite remaining energetic and involved throughout the contest.

Vinicius did not make a direct contribution to either of Real Madrid’s goals, but he continued to work actively until his withdrawal. According to Spanish newspaper AS, a significant number of whistles could be heard around the stadium as he left the field to be replaced by Carreras.

The incident then turned into a public display of support from Mourinho.

Rather than reacting angrily or ignoring the response from the stands, Vinicius applauded while looking towards the supporters. Mourinho also began clapping and kept his eyes directed towards the crowd.

The Portuguese manager accompanied the forward as he walked towards the substitutes’ bench, continuing to applaud him throughout the journey. When Vinicius turned towards some of the supporters, Mourinho embraced him warmly and patted him on the back several times.

The gesture highlighted the friendly relationship between the manager and the Brazilian player, while also serving as an unmistakable public expression of support from Mourinho at a difficult moment for Vinicius.

The Madrid forward had remained active during the match, even though he left the pitch without registering a goal or assist. His substitution came shortly after Inter Milan’s goal had changed the atmosphere inside the Santiago Bernabeu and added pressure to the closing stages.

Mourinho’s decision to walk alongside Vinicius ensured that the player did not leave the field alone as the whistles continued. The pair’s exchange quickly became one of the most notable moments of Real Madrid’s victory, with the manager’s reaction drawing attention as he openly stood beside his player.

Real Madrid ultimately held on for a 2-1 win over Inter Milan, beginning their Champions League campaign with a victory despite the late pressure from the visitors. The evening therefore ended with three points for Mourinho’s side, but also with an emotional scene involving Vinicius and the home crowd.

The episode has prompted further discussion among football supporters, particularly about the relationship between players and fans when a match takes an unfavourable turn. For Vinicius, Mourinho’s intervention offered visible encouragement as he made his way away from the pitch at the Santiago Bernabeu.
