The presidency of Cameroon has reportedly set its sights on Portuguese football manager José Mourinho to lead the national team, the “Indomitable Lions,” in their upcoming campaigns.
Negotiations between Mourinho and Cameroonian officials have reportedly progressed significantly, despite the coach’s salary demands surpassing the allocated budget, according to the website “Allez Les Lions.”
While Mourinho’s financial expectations pose a challenge, there remains optimism regarding a potential agreement, as the presidency appears resolute in its determination to secure the services of the esteemed coach.
The move comes after the non-renewal of former head coach Rigobert Song’s contract following the team’s mediocre performance in the recent African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The prospect of Mourinho taking the helm of the Cameroon national team is particularly intriguing due to his historic partnership with Samuel Eto’o, the current president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT).
Eto’o and Mourinho famously collaborated during the 2009-2010 season at Inter Milan, where they achieved unprecedented success, clinching the Scudetto, Italian Cup, and the prestigious UEFA Champions League title, marking a historic treble for the club.
For Cameroon, the timing of Mourinho’s potential appointment couldn’t be more crucial, with pivotal World Cup qualifiers scheduled for June.
The team faces critical matches in the third and fourth rounds of the qualifying playoffs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, presenting an opportunity for Mourinho to make an immediate impact on the squad’s performance and aspirations.
