Former Real Madrid general manager Jorge Valdano has defended club president Florentino Perez’s support for Brazilian star Vinicius Junior, insisting the attacker has received unparalleled backing despite criticism from sections of the Real Madrid fanbase.
In recent months, many supporters have questioned Vinicius’ attitude and on-field antics, with some even calling for the club to consider selling the 25-year-old. However, after Vinicius’ standout performance in Real’s Champions League victory against Monaco, Valdano emphasized that Perez’s efforts have been extraordinary.
“It’s impossible to have more support than Vinicius has had. From the president and now from the new coach. It’s impossible,” Valdano told Movistar Plus+.
He highlighted what he described as “unprecedented” gestures from Perez, including pulling the squad off a team bus and skipping the Ballon d’Or gala when Vinicius was overlooked, describing these actions as “a sign not just of affection, but of the club’s dedication to the player.”
Valdano also commented on Vinicius’ post-goal conduct against Monaco, when the Brazilian feinted past a waiting Kylian Mbappé and returned to the centre circle without joining the crowd celebration.
“Vinicius showed today that it’s not easy; he got his revenge on the fans in a way. He didn’t participate in the celebration with the fans after scoring such a great goal,” the Argentine explained.
Valdano concluded with an observation on Vinicius’ temperament, noting that such displays of frustration are temporary but revealing.
“That heals in three days, but it does give an indication of the player’s personality,” he said, pointing to the resilience and self-assuredness that have become defining traits of Vinicius’ career.
