Jorge Jesus booed by Portugal fans after Cristiano Ronaldo dispute

Jorge Jesus was booed by a number of Portugal supporters as the national team manager left the squad’s hotel in Copenhagen, following his public dispute with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Portugal are due to face Denmark at Parken Stadium in the Danish capital shortly, in the third round of Group D in the UEFA Nations League. The reaction directed at Jesus came before the match and was linked to the decision by Ronaldo to leave the Portugal camp.

Portuguese outlet SIC Noticias published video showing fans jeering Jesus as he departed the team hotel. Its accompanying report said the incident followed the recent controversy involving the manager and Portugal captain.

Ronaldo left the squad on Wednesday and returned to Madrid after a disagreement with Jesus over his failure to play in Portugal’s previous Nations League fixture against Norway.

The forward’s departure came only a few hours after Jesus said he had the final authority over team selection. The manager also acknowledged that he had broken a promise made to Ronaldo that he would feature for part of the Norway match.

Portugal lead Group D with six points from their opening two games. Denmark are third on three points, level with Norway but behind them on goal difference.

The match in Copenhagen is therefore taking place against the backdrop of mounting pressure on Jesus, whose handling of Ronaldo has prompted a hostile response from some supporters before kick-off.
