Jordan Pickford, the Everton and England goalkeeper, is to stand trial after admitting an offence of driving without due care and attention following an incident in which a three-car collision was narrowly avoided.
Pickford, 32, was driving a blue Lamborghini Urus worth about £200,000 in Knutsford, Cheshire, on 14 April, according to the BBC.
Court documents say he failed to obey a “give way” sign at a junction, forcing two other vehicles to brake heavily to avoid a crash. The Lamborghini then continued along the road at speed.
Cecil Ricardo, an officer with Cheshire Police, said in a statement that he was stopped on Bexton Street waiting at traffic lights when he saw the vehicle being driven by Pickford.
“The vehicle reached the junction with Toft Street and completely ignored the give-way markings,” he said. “It entered Toft Street, causing two vehicles to brake to avoid a collision.”
He added: “The Lamborghini then accelerated along Toft Street.”
Ricardo said he activated the police car’s lights and siren before following Pickford. The officer reported that he was travelling at 50mph – about 80km/h – but the Lamborghini was pulling away from him, despite the speed limit on that stretch of road being 30mph, or about 48km/h.
According to the statement, Pickford noticed the police vehicle behind him and stopped.
The Everton goalkeeper admitted the offence in writing at Warrington Magistrates’ Court, but requested a personal appearance so he could present his case. The proceedings were then formally adjourned.
Pickford is due to appear at Chester Magistrates’ Court on 7 December.
He has made 336 appearances for Everton and won 92 England caps. Pickford has also played at the 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cups, and was England’s goalkeeper in the finals of the 2020 and 2024 European Championships.
