Jonathan Okechukwu: Austrian 2. Liga side A. Salzburg eye move for Nigeria midfielder

Nigeria midfielder Jonathan Okechukwu of Plateau United is being linked with a move to Austrian 2. Liga side A. Salzburg as the European club monitor options in central midfield ahead of next season.

The 18-year-old, born in Kano and predominantly right-footed, has emerged as a regular in the Nigerian Premier Football League, operating in central midfield for Plateau United. His current deal with the Jos-based club runs until 30 June 2026, a contract situation that could encourage Salzburg to test Plateau United’s resolve before he enters the final year of his agreement.

Okechukwu joined Plateau United from Crown FC on 3 August 2025 and has quickly established himself in the senior set-up. In the current NPFL campaign he has made 33 appearances, scoring once and providing one assist, while accumulating 2,593 minutes of league football. That level of involvement at his age is understood to have alerted scouts looking for competitively tested midfielders.

His current market valuation stands at around €75,000, a figure that would represent a relatively low-cost acquisition for a European club but a potentially significant outgoing for Plateau United, who only added him to their squad last season. Salzburg’s interest comes at a time when clubs across Europe are increasingly focusing on players with extensive top-flight minutes at a young age.

Plateau United are under no immediate pressure to sell, with Okechukwu contracted through to the summer of 2026, but the structure and timing of any formal approach from A. Salzburg are likely to hinge on how strongly the Austrian side push to conclude a deal before his final contract year begins.
