Jonathan Lawson: Anglo-Nigerian forward joins FF Jaro on free transfer from Watford U21

FF Jaro have signed Anglo-Nigerian centre-forward Jonathan Lawson on a free transfer from Watford U21, with the 20-year-old agreeing a deal until 31 December 2026. The move takes the attacker from English youth and lower-league football into Finland’s top flight, where Jaro compete in the Veikkausliiga.

Lawson, born on 16 October 2005, leaves Watford’s development set-up after a series of loan spells designed to give him senior experience. He steps into a new environment in Pietarsaari as he looks to establish himself at first-team level over the next 18 months.

The forward featured in the 2025-26 Premier League Cup, where he made five appearances and scored once, also providing an assist. He was involved in 25% of his side’s goals in that competition and started 40% of their games, underlining his growing role before opting for a move abroad.

Lawson first linked up with Watford at under-18 level in 2023 after a spell with Cray Valley PM. He progressed into the club’s under-21 side the following year, then spent time out on loan with Kings Langley, Hitchin Town, Banbury and Folkestone Invicta as he adjusted to senior football in England’s lower tiers.

His switch to FF Jaro marks the first time Lawson has left the English system, and the free transfer brings to an end his association with Watford’s academy and under-21 teams.
