Jonathan Bamba believes he can reclaim his place in the Côte d’Ivoire national team ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The 29-year-old winger, who made his debut for the Elephants in 2023 and helped them win the 2024 AFCON title, aims to repeat that triumph.

Since his last appearance in March 2024, Bamba has not featured under head coach Emerse Faé.

His move from Spain’s Celta Vigo to Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire FC in January was initially seen as the reason for his absence.

However, despite solid performances in the United States with 34 appearances, five goals, and four assists, Bamba’s exclusion has sparked debate among fans and analysts.

Speaking to Afrik Foot, the former AS Saint-Étienne player made it clear that his situation is not due to conflict with the coach.

He said that the team’s current depth and the rise of new talents have made competition for places tougher than ever.

“There are no problems. I still speak with the coach and my teammates,” he explained.

“New players have emerged and play for top clubs, Simon Adingra at Sunderland, Amad Diallo at Manchester United, and Nicolas Pépé at Villarreal.

It’s normal they get selected. I just have to keep working hard to earn my place again.”

Bamba, who holds both Ivorian and French nationality, remains determined and motivated.

He believes the Elephants can defend their continental crown despite the strength of other African powerhouses.

“I have a great feeling about this tournament,” he said. “The team looks strong with a balanced squad.

Even with injuries, we stay competitive. I don’t know if we’re the favorites, but I feel confident.

Senegal, Morocco, and Algeria are strong, but in this competition, it’s the pitch that decides.”

Côte d’Ivoire’s AFCON 2024 victory under Faé brought pride to the nation, but it also raised expectations for the upcoming edition.

The coach now faces a difficult task in choosing his final squad, as several attacking players continue to perform well at club level.

For Bamba, the goal remains clear, to wear the national colours again and help the Elephants succeed on African soil.

His optimism reflects the mindset of a player who refuses to give up on his international ambitions.

As the AFCON countdown continues, Bamba’s form in MLS could determine whether he secures a return to the team that made him a continental champion.
