Jonathan Akpoborie criticises NFF for delay in naming Super Eagles squad for World Cup playoffs
Former Nigeria international Jonathan Akpoborie has taken a swipe at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over its delay in announcing the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying playoffs.
Akpoborie expressed concern that the federation’s slow approach could once again undermine the team’s preparations, describing the situation as a reflection of the disorganisation that has plagued Nigerian football administration for years.
“It is typical, typical of Nigeria. They always waste time,” Akpoborie said in an interview with Brila FM.
He went on to question the NFF’s lack of urgency in naming the team.
“By now, there should have been an official announcement. What is the NFF waiting for? This delay can be dangerous,” he warned.
“Maybe two or three days before the game, you’ll see everyone scrambling to bring in players. This attitude has affected us and kept us where we are today. Delay is dangerous, that’s the most important thing,” Akpoborie added.
The Super Eagles are set to compete in a playoff tournament in Rabat, Morocco, where they will face Gabon, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Their campaign begins with a semi-final clash against Gabon on Thursday, November 13, at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex.
Akpoborie, a member of the Golden Eaglets side that won the 1985 U-16 World Cup, enjoyed a successful club career in Germany, playing for Stuttgart and Wolfsburg.
He believes the Super Eagles can qualify for the World Cup but wants the NFF to up their game.
