The Gambia has officially appointed Johnathan McKinstry as the new head coach of the national football team, the Scorpions. The Northern Irish technician’s appointment was confirmed after months of anticipation and a rigorous selection process conducted by the National Sports Council (NSC).
On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, the NSC, operating under the Ministry of Youth and Sports, released an official statement announcing McKinstry’s appointment.
“The Gambia National Sports Council (NSC), operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, is delighted to announce the selection of Mr. Johnathan McKinstry as the new head coach of the senior national football team, the Scorpions,” the statement read.
McKinstry’s appointment comes after a thorough evaluation of 90 potential candidates by the Ministry and the Gambia Football Federation Technical and Development Committee.
The selection process was narrowed down to five exceptional coaches, with McKinstry emerging as the preferred choice due to his outstanding qualifications and his readiness to lead the team.
The newly appointed coach brings a wealth of experience, having recently secured the Kenyan Premier League title with Gor Mahia.
McKinstry is expected to sign his contract next week, which will see him at the helm for the next two years.
