Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has lavished praise on Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch, describing the Dutchman as one of the most underrated players in the Premier League.
Gravenberch, 22, has found a new lease of life at Anfield this season under manager Arne Slot.
After struggling to make an impact in his first campaign under Jürgen Klopp, the Dutch international has thrived in a deeper midfield role, showcasing his versatility and tactical intelligence.
Mikel, who played as a defensive midfielder during his successful career with Chelsea, expressed his admiration for Gravenberch’s performances and drew comparisons with Manchester City’s Rodri.
Gravenberch’s transformation under Arne Slot
Since Slot’s arrival, Liverpool have undergone significant tactical adjustments, with Gravenberch playing a pivotal role in midfield.
Previously utilized in a more advanced position, the Dutchman has now been deployed as a holding midfielder, where he has impressed with his defensive contributions, passing ability, and forward runs.
Mikel, speaking on his podcast, believes Gravenberch is not getting the recognition he deserves for his performances.
“So because I’m one of them, I play my position. When I see a player that plays that well, I become a big fan,” Mikel said, as quoted by TBR Football.
And for me, Gravenberch, the way he plays, not just defensively, but breaking players down when he has the ball, you know, he moves the ball forward, he moves the team forward. For me, he’s a bit like Rodri. And for me, he’s been absolutely fantastic, really.”
A key figure in Liverpool’s midfield
Mikel’s comparison to Rodri highlights just how influential Gravenberch has been in Liverpool’s system.
The Manchester City midfielder is widely regarded as the best defensive midfielder in world football, known for his ability to dictate play, break up opposition attacks, and provide a crucial link between defense and attack.
Gravenberch’s skill set mirrors these qualities, making him an integral part of Liverpool’s midfield as they challenge for domestic and European honors.
His ability to read the game, control possession, and transition from defense to attack has provided balance to Slot’s setup.
Lack of recognition for defensive midfielders
Mikel also touched on a long-standing issue in football—the lack of appreciation for defensive midfielders.
Players in this role often go unnoticed, despite their crucial contributions to a team’s success.
The former Nigeria captain believes Gravenberch deserves more recognition for the work he does on the pitch.
“I feel like players in your position, even when you were playing, you never get the credit,” Mikel added.
As Liverpool push for silverware this season, Gravenberch’s performances will be key to their success.
With praise from a Premier League legend like Mikel, the young Dutchman may finally start to receive the credit he deserves for his growing influence at Anfield.
