John Edward’s recent decisions as Zamalek’s sporting director have drawn harsh criticism from several club legends, sparking fierce debate over the club’s future direction.
Edward reportedly wants to bring in former ENPPI football director Abdel Nasser Mohamed and ex-Police Union player Hassan Gomaa into key roles for the upcoming season.
These moves follow Edward’s decision to part ways with the technical staff led by Ayman El-Ramady. But it’s the perceived disregard for Zamalek’s former players that has caused an uproar.
Gamal Abdel Hamid said in a television interview that he initially supported Edward but questioned why former Zamalek players were overlooked. “Where are Abdel Halim Ali, Ashraf Qassem, and Ahmed Ramzy?” he asked. “There are many icons who could fill the position.”
Tarek Yehia expressed shock at the appointments, questioning the legacy of the incoming figures. “Has Zamalek dried up to this extent?” he asked.
Ayman Younes called the decision “fatal” and said the club is at a crossroads. Mohamed Abu El-Ela added that Zamalek is rich in talent, but needs to create the right conditions for them to succeed.
