Benzema Snubs Liverpool, Sparks Backlash from Former Reds Striker
Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has reportedly turned down a move to Liverpool, citing that the Merseyside club is not “high-class enough” for him — a remark that has drawn sharp criticism from former Liverpool striker John Aldridge.
According to The Daily Star, the French international rejected a recent approach from Liverpool, who are seeking a replacement for Luis Suárez following his high-profile move to Barcelona. The Reds’ manager, Brendan Rodgers, is said to have made contact with Benzema approximately two weeks ago, but the 26-year-old forward dismissed the idea of a switch to Anfield, despite no objections from his club, Real Madrid.
“Liverpool were informed that they are not a high-class enough club for Karim Benzema,” the report stated, attributing the refusal directly to the player rather than to Real Madrid.
The comments have not gone down well on Merseyside. John Aldridge, who played for Liverpool in the late 1980s, expressed his frustration during an appearance on Sky Sports. “Karim Benzema is an indecent player. He’s never truly established himself at Real Madrid; he’s always been something of a supporting act,” said Aldridge. “It’s absolutely shocking to disrespect a world-renowned club like Liverpool.”
Despite the controversy, Benzema’s place at the Santiago Bernabéu appears secure. Manager Carlo Ancelotti has consistently shown confidence in the striker, who had a strong showing for France at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Ancelotti sees Benzema as a central figure in Madrid’s attack going into the new season.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will likely continue their search for a high-profile forward as they look to bolster their squad for the Premier League and Champions League campaigns.
