Joan Gamper Trophy: Abdelkarim rewards Barcelona faith against Al Ahly
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick fielded a strong starting XI as his side beat Al Ahly 2-1 in the 61st Joan Gamper Trophy on Wednesday, with Hamza Abdelkarim scoring against his former club to strengthen his case for a place in the first team.
The victory came only a few days before Barcelona begin their La Liga campaign. Despite the narrow margin, the Catalan side made a positive impression, according to Catalan newspaper Sport, which assessed each player’s performance.
Sport highlighted Flick’s continued reliance on Xavi Espart as an important part of his plans, while Abdelkarim was handed a starting place against the Egyptian club where he previously played.
“It was also striking that Barcelona started with three left-footed players in attack,” the newspaper noted.
Joan Garcia – 6: spectator
Barcelona’s goalkeeper had almost nothing to do during the first half and was required to make only one straightforward save.
Eric Garcia – 6: dependable
The versatile defender began at full-back. He did not produce a particularly eye-catching performance but completed his duties effectively, as he regularly does.
Jules Kounde – 7: composed
The France international returned to his natural position at centre-back and looked comfortable and calm in a role in which he excelled during his time at Sevilla. Although he was not seriously tested, he made a positive impression.
Gerard Martin – 6: corrective
Martin continued on the left side of central defence. He was alert, quick and avoided mistakes, giving Barcelona a degree of security at the back.
Alejandro Balde – 7: creator
The left-back repeatedly pushed forward, taking advantage of Raphinha’s movement. His persistence was rewarded when he delivered an excellent pass for Abdelkarim, who converted it to give Barcelona the lead.
Marc Bernal – 7: eager
The midfielder looked in good condition and showed that he wants to compete for a starting berth despite the signing of Rodri. His generosity and tactical intelligence made him a consistent source of support for his team-mates, while he also impressed when carrying and passing the ball.
Xavi Espart – 8: outstanding
Espart started in midfield and operated in a role similar to that usually occupied by Pedri, with a tendency to drift towards the left. He played at a greater speed than those around him and combined intensity, aggression and precision in possession.
He recovered a number of balls and came close to scoring, which would have been fitting reward for an excellent display.
Fermin Lopez – 7: energetic
The attacking midfielder created a clear opening after rounding the goalkeeper and also fashioned an excellent chance for Raphinha. He was among the game’s most prominent performers, while also contributing his usual defensive work.
Lamine Yamal – 6: relaxed
Yamal still needs more time to rediscover his best form. He made several passing errors that are unusual for him but produced glimpses of his exceptional talent.
The forward appeared to be enjoying himself, although he needs to regain his match rhythm. His performance improved gradually as the game progressed.
Hamza Abdelkarim – 7: making his case
Starting against his former club, the Egyptian forward was presented with a clear chance but rushed his attempt as his eagerness to score led him into an offside position.
He eventually put Barcelona ahead with a fine attacking move and an excellent left-footed finish. The goal continued to improve his prospects with the senior side.
Raphinha – 8: excellent
The Brazil winger returned to the left flank, one of his strongest positions. He made his customary runs and played with purpose, going close with a powerful effort from outside the penalty area.
Although his execution is not always precise, his commitment was total. That was particularly evident in the 27th minute, when he tracked back strongly to help his defence.
Raphinha also won a penalty and converted it himself to complete Barcelona’s scoring.
