Mathilde PetitJean Amivi, a relatively unknown name to many Togolese, is set to make her mark at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi at just 19 years old, representing Togo alongside two other athletes. Her journey to this point started unexpectedly a few months ago when the Togolese Ski Federation reached out to her on Facebook, proposing the idea of forming a team for the Sochi Games.
Reflecting on the decision, Mathilde shares, “The Togolese Federation contacted me via Facebook in May because they had a project to set up a team for Sochi. I thought about it with my parents, but it was me who made the choice. Even though my parents are passionate about what I do, they would never choose for me.”
Born in Niger in 1994 to a French father and Togolese mother, Odette Adzo, Mathilde moved to France two years later. Currently holding a Togolese FIS and Junior 2nd-year license, she attends Mont-Blanc High School in Passy. Her skiing career has seen significant success in the last two seasons, with Mathilde achieving the title of vice-champion of France cadets in the cadet category 2. Additionally, in the Youth 2 category, she secured three French vice-champion titles in sprint, mass start, and skiathlon, showcasing her versatility in both classic and skating techniques.
Despite her potential to join the French team, Mathilde has chosen to compete for Togo, recognizing that the competition is intense in France. She views the Winter Olympics as an opportunity to gain valuable experience for the future while enjoying the experience. For Mathilde, representing Togo is not only a strategic decision but also a heartfelt one. She expresses her connection to Togo, emphasizing the cultural aspects that form a part of her identity.
As the Winter Olympics approach, Mathilde remains open to the possibility of being chosen as the standard-bearer for the Togolese delegation, expressing her honor at such an opportunity while stating, “If I am offered it, I will be honored, but I will never ask for it.” Mathilde PetitJean Amivi stands proud, ready to represent her mother’s country with a mix of passion and cultural connection.
