Jesus Owono ‘does not even know who he is’ after fatal collision with Tenerife striker

Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono is suffering a severe psychological breakdown after the accidental collision that led to the death of Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel.

De Miguel, who was 30, died last Tuesday morning from “accidental chest trauma” after colliding with Owono as the goalkeeper moved to clear the ball during the closing stages of a match on Monday evening.

The incident brought the game to a halt and left Spanish football in mourning. Reports say Owono, 25, has been deeply affected by what happened.

A source close to one of the goalkeeper’s team-mates told The Athletic: “Owono is shattered, confined to his home and cut off from the world. At this moment, he does not even know who he is.”

The Spanish players’ union, AFE, has promised to provide Owono with psychological support, including specialist sessions to help him cope with the consequences of the collision.

Owono: ‘These are the hardest days of my life’

Owono was sent off after the collision and initially began walking away from the pitch. He then returned to check on De Miguel as medical staff rushed to treat the Tenerife forward.

Following De Miguel’s death, Owono issued a statement through his club.

“These are the hardest days of my life,” he said. “I am struggling to find the words, and it is very difficult for me to process anything that has happened. I feel immense pain at losing Jesus. I am thinking of him, his family and everyone who loved him.”

He added: “I know there are many things that need to be dealt with, and I will face what comes with respect. But right now, honestly, I cannot think about anything except Jesus and the grief we are experiencing. Rest in peace, Jesus.”

Owono’s Andorra team-mate Lautaro Spatz said the squad had been left “completely shattered” by the tragedy.

“There are moments when football loses its meaning,” Spatz said in a statement. “Moments that leave a permanent mark and make you realise how fragile life is. What we have been through is something none of us will ever forget. It is a tragedy that has left us completely shattered, without words and with a grief that is difficult to explain.”

The listed Segunda Division fixtures include Granada against Tenerife on 07 November 2026, and Andorra against Mallorca on 08 November 2026.
