Jess Thorup to leave Al Ahly after difficult campaign

Jess Thorup is set to leave Al Ahly at the end of the season following a disappointing campaign for the Egyptian giants.

The Danish coach is expected to bid farewell to supporters on Wednesday when Al Ahly face Al Masry in their final Egyptian Premier League fixture of the season.

Thorup’s departure comes after a challenging spell in charge marked by setbacks both domestically and on the continental stage.

Al Ahly suffered elimination from the CAF Champions League and also fell short in the race for the Egyptian Premier League title, leaving the club without the major honours they had targeted at the start of the season.

Despite the frustrations, the final league match still carries significant importance for the Red Devils.

Securing a CAF Champions League qualification spot for next season would offer some consolation and provide Thorup with a positive send-off after a turbulent campaign.

Thorup was appointed to lead Al Ahly after replacing José Luis Riveiro, arriving with expectations of maintaining the club’s dominance in Egyptian and African football.

However, results failed to meet the lofty standards associated with the Cairo-based powerhouse, with pressure mounting following their Champions League exit and inconsistent domestic performances.

The clash against Al Masry is now expected to serve not only as a crucial fixture in Al Ahly’s quest for continental qualification but also as an emotional farewell for Thorup as he prepares to bring his tenure at the club to an end.

An official announcement regarding his exit is anticipated following the conclusion of the season.
