Jess Thorup names Al Ahly squad for Aigle Noir clash, excludes nine players
Danish manager Jess Thorup has announced Al-Ahly’s squad for Saturday’s return leg against Aigle Noir in the CAF Champions League round of 32.
The Red Giant excluded nine players, including goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy, for technical reasons, while others face injuries or unavailability.
Key exclusions involve Imam Ashour, sidelined by virus A, and Ahmed Reda, Hussein Al-Shehata, and Mohamed Sherif due to injuries. The club registered 20 players for the match at Cairo International Stadium, where Al-Ahly holds a 1-0 advantage from the first leg.
Regarding Imam Ashour’s condition, sources revealed he’s undergoing comprehensive medical treatment following viral infection. Recent blood tests showed viral levels declining to approximately 160 degrees, moving toward the normal threshold of 50 degrees. The midfielder faces a gradual rehabilitation program before returning to full training, having been restricted from physical activity for over a month.
Thorup expressed dissatisfaction with recent performances against Al Ittihad Alexandria despite winning 2-1, stating the team showed decline after the second goal. He plans tactical adjustments while managing player rotation ahead of Wednesday’s important Petro jet encounter.
