Jess Thorup in Cairo for crunch talks as Al Ahly consider managerial exit

Danish coach Jess Thorup has arrived in Cairo alongside his agent, with discussions now expected to take place with the hierarchy of Egyptian giants Al Ahly over his future at the club.

A meeting has been scheduled as the record African champions explore a possible agreement to part ways with the 55-year-old, just months after his appointment, in what would be a swift and unexpected managerial turnaround.

Thorup’s short spell in charge has failed to deliver the expected impact.

Under his leadership, Al Ahly missed out on qualification for the CAF Champions League and also fell short in the Egyptian Premier League title race—two setbacks that have intensified scrutiny on both the coach and the club’s decision-making.

The disappointing campaign has triggered internal discussions at the Cairo-based side, with sources indicating that all options are now on the table, including a mutual termination of the contract.

Thorup, who arrived with a strong reputation from European football, was expected to bring structure and consistency to the team’s domestic and continental ambitions.

However, results have fallen short of expectations in a club where success is non-negotiable.

Al Ahly’s leadership is now weighing a potential reset ahead of the next phase of the season, with clarity on the coach’s future expected after the upcoming meeting in the Egyptian capital.

Mark van Bommel and Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso have all been linked to Al Ahly ahead of next season’s campaign.
