Jerome Boateng steps back from Bayern Munich internship amid fan backlash
Bayern Munich have officially confirmed that former defender Jerome Boateng will not be undertaking a coaching internship at the club following a mutual decision reached this week.
The development comes after a wave of public criticism and fan opposition surrounding Boateng’s recent legal issues.
In a statement released by the club, Bayern Munich described the discussions as “constructive,” noting that Boateng himself chose not to proceed with the internship to avoid causing reputational damage to the club.
The former Germany international is said to feel a deep connection to Bayern, having spent a decade at the club from 2011 to 2021, and does not wish to be the cause of division among supporters.
“In a constructive exchange that FC Bayern and Jérôme Boateng had this week, it was decided that Jérôme Boateng will not intern at FC Bayern. Jérôme feels very connected to FC Bayern and does not want FC Bayern to suffer damage due to the current controversial discussion surrounding his person,” the German club said in an official notice.
The controversy stems from Boateng’s conviction last year for bodily harm against a former partner, a verdict that has sparked widespread debate and opposition among sections of the Bayern fan base.
His potential return in a coaching capacity led to renewed backlash, with an online petition titled “Setting borders against misogynistic violence: Jerome Boateng should not be allowed back to Bayern Munich” gaining significant traction, gathering close to 2,000 signatures within days.
Boateng had revealed earlier in the week that he had spoken with Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany and received initial approval for the internship, although no date had been finalised. However, the growing public pressure appears to have played a crucial role in the final decision.
This is not the first time Bayern have faced internal resistance regarding Boateng. In 2023, similar concerns were raised when the club reportedly considered re-signing him due to defensive injuries. The latest development brings renewed attention to the ongoing legal and ethical discussions surrounding athletes facing serious personal conduct allegations.
Boateng’s decision to withdraw reflects both his awareness of the public sentiment and his desire to avoid further controversy at a club where he won numerous titles, including the UEFA Champions League and multiple Bundesliga championships.
While Bayern have not indicated any future plans regarding Boateng, the club’s stance highlights the growing influence of fan voices and public perception in decisions involving off-field conduct and club values.
