Jeremy Doku could return for Manchester City against Sunderland
Jeremy Doku could return to Manchester City’s squad for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Sunderland after recovering from a calf problem.
City manager Enzo Maresca offered an encouraging update on the Belgium winger, although he stopped short of confirming that Doku would start at the Stadium of Light.
“Probably he can be available for Sunderland,” Maresca said.
Doku’s possible comeback would give City another attacking option on the flank after his recent absence. His pace, dribbling and ability to beat defenders could prove valuable against a Sunderland side expected to defend with discipline and threaten on the counterattack.
Maresca has warned his players not to underestimate the hosts. The City boss watched Sunderland’s recent defeat by Arsenal twice and believes the scoreline did not reflect their performance.
“I watched the game against Arsenal and I watched again in the last two days,” he said.
“If you watch the game, you realise how strong they are. I think, personally, they didn’t deserve to lose that game.”
Maresca also praised Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris and said his team already understands its responsibilities in and out of possession. He described the fixture as City’s toughest league challenge so far this season.
