Jens Fiesing: Al-Ittihad turn to Gamba Osaka coach for a fresh start

Jens Fiesing, 38, has taken charge of Al-Ittihad as the Jeddah club begins a new era following a disappointing campaign defending its Roshn Saudi League title.

The German coach may be unfamiliar to many followers of the Saudi top flight, but he arrives in the Kingdom after gaining his first experience as head coach of a senior side with Japanese club Gamba Osaka.

His appointment represents a change of direction for the team known as the “Tigers”, who will now look to reclaim the Roshn Saudi League crown they won the season before last.

Al-Ittihad’s decision comes after the club’s unsuccessful attempt to retain that title last season. Fiesing has been placed in charge as the Jeddah giants seek to recover and challenge again at the top of Saudi football.

The Saudi Pro League website has reviewed Fiesing’s coaching background and the reasons Al-Ittihad’s officials believe he is the right person to succeed Sergio Conceicao.

A new chapter for Al-Ittihad

Fiesing takes over at a club whose immediate ambition is clear: to restore its position as a title contender. Al-Ittihad’s previous championship success came in the season before last, but its title defence did not meet expectations.

That outcome has prompted the Tigers to take a different approach, with Fiesing selected to lead the next stage of the club’s development. His arrival marks a fresh direction rather than a continuation of the previous campaign.

Although his name is not yet widely known among Roshn Saudi League supporters, Fiesing’s appointment follows his first opportunity to manage a senior first team. That experience came at Gamba Osaka in Japan, giving him a move from the Japanese game to one of the most prominent clubs in Saudi Arabia.

The transition places him in charge of an Al-Ittihad team determined to move on from a disappointing season. His task is to guide the Tigers back into contention for the competition they won two seasons ago.

Fiesing succeeds Conceicao

The German replaces Sergio Conceicao as Al-Ittihad head coach. According to the Saudi Pro League’s account of the appointment, club officials concluded that Fiesing was the appropriate candidate to lead the team after Conceicao’s spell in charge.

His arrival also gives Al-Ittihad an opportunity to reset its ambitions. The club’s focus is once again on competing for the Roshn Saudi League title, with Fiesing expected to oversee the attempt to revive its challenge.

For a coach who is still relatively unknown to many Saudi supporters, the move represents a significant step. Fiesing’s first senior managerial role at Gamba Osaka has now been followed by the responsibility of leading Al-Ittihad, a club seeking to recover from an underwhelming defence of its crown.

The Tigers’ next era will therefore begin with a new German coach at the helm and the objective of restoring the club to the summit of the Roshn Saudi League.
