That’s really unfortunate news about Jean Paul Akono. After suffering a stroke and being dismissed as Cameroon’s national team coach, to then be robbed of such a large sum—20 million CFA francs (around 30,000 euros)—is a harsh blow.
The theft reportedly happened at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, where Akono had exchanged the money before traveling back to Cameroon to renew his visa and visit family. Shockingly, the bag he was carrying with the money was nearly emptied, leaving him with just 80 euros.
It’s especially troubling that those close to him might be involved: a man named Christian Mballa Mekongo, allegedly Akono’s assistant, was arrested, and even Akono’s younger brother, Georges, has been named as a suspect.
Akono has filed a formal complaint with the authorities, and an investigation is underway. This is a sad and complicated situation for the former coach, who had already faced significant health and professional challenges.
