Jean-Luc Dompé edges closer to HSV return

Hamburger SV have been handed a boost with cautious optimism growing over Jean-Luc Dompé’s comeback, as the winger inches closer to a return from injury.

The 30-year-old was back on the pitch with the team at the start of Wednesday’s training session, according to Hamburger Abendblatt, a clear step forward after his recent lay-off.

Dompé’s progress is encouraging, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready in time for Saturday’s Bundesliga home match against TSG Hoffenheim. After a longer spell out, HSV are reluctant to take any unnecessary risks and are expected to carefully manage his workload over the coming days. A place in the matchday squad is currently considered unlikely, with the club prioritising a sustainable build-up rather than a rushed return.

His comeback would be especially valuable given Hamburg’s stretched options on the wings. Philip Otele is suspended following a recent red card, and other wide players have only been available to a limited extent. That makes Dompé’s pace and one-on-one ability even more important, as he is regarded as one of HSV’s real difference-makers in attacking areas. Whether he can already help this weekend will depend on how he comes through the final training sessions.
