Ivory Coast witnessed a change in leadership during the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), an unprecedented move in international football. After a disappointing group phase that concluded with a 0-4 defeat against Equatorial Guinea, coach Jean-Louis Gasset resigned under mounting public pressure.
Idriss Diallo, the president of the Ivorian Football Federation, reluctantly accepted Gasset’s decision. However, with unexpectedly favorable results in other groups, the Elephants secured a spot in the round of 16. Now guided by Emerse Faé, the team has advanced to the final, a remarkable feat on home soil.
In a candid conversation with L’Equipe, Jean-Louis Gasset discussed the remarkable journey and expressed unwavering support for Ivory Coast. Despite the challenges, Gasset remains proud of the squad, emphasizing the effectiveness of the chosen commando, even though he wished for a different outcome.
Reflecting on the initial criticism for retaining injured players like Haller and Adingra in the squad, Gasset stated, “The list was well constructed even if I didn’t manage to put it in place well. We will have arrived at the objective differently but it proves that the chosen commando is the right one.”
Expressing his joy for the players, especially Haller and Adingra, Gasset revealed, “Some people didn’t understand why I kept Haller and (Simon) Adingra. There you go… And both score, I was so happy. I dream of seeing Haller score the goal in the final. He deserves it so much.”
Despite stepping down, Gasset has remained an ardent supporter, watching every match and sending messages of pride and encouragement. Reflecting on his departure, he remarked, “My departure brought peace.
We say to ourselves, he was the culprit and that protects others. You had to see death up close perhaps to bounce back.” The unexpected turn of events has brought a unique narrative to Ivory Coast’s AFCON journey, capturing the attention and admiration of football enthusiasts globally.
