Niger Appoints Jean-Guy Wallemme as New National Team Coach Ahead of 2021 AFCON Qualifiers
Niger has officially named its new national team coach. The Nigerien Football Federation (FENIFOOT) has confirmed the appointment of Jean-Guy Wallemme, the former manager of French club Racing Club de Lens, as the new head of the Mena, Niger’s national team. The announcement brings clarity to the team just days before the start of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Wallemme, a seasoned French coach, brings extensive experience from both club and international football. In addition to his stint at Lens, he has previously coached in Congo and has spent the past year managing Chartres, a National 2 side in France. Interestingly, he will continue his responsibilities at Chartres while taking charge of the Mena, showcasing his ability to manage dual roles effectively. The Chartres club expressed its support for the new challenge, stating on its website: “Versatile, our coach, Jean-Guy Wallemme, is taking on a new challenge with FENIFOOT while remaining committed to the Chartres project.”
The French coach succeeds François Zahoui, the Ivorian tactician who left Niger during the summer to take over the Central African Republic national team. Zahoui had guided the Mena through previous campaigns, and his departure left a gap that required prompt attention, especially with the AFCON qualifiers looming. Wallemme’s appointment comes at a crucial time, just four hours before Niger’s opening match in the qualifying campaign.
The Mena are preparing for a challenging schedule. Their first game is set for November 16th against Ivory Coast, one of Africa’s strongest sides. This will be followed by a home match against Madagascar on November 19th in Niamey. Wallemme inherits a team that needs both tactical stability and morale boosting to compete effectively in a highly competitive qualification group.
Despite the tight timeline, Wallemme expressed determination to make an immediate impact. His dual role managing both Chartres and Niger is expected to keep him sharp and provide him with unique insights that could benefit the national side. Known for his tactical acumen and experience in African football, Wallemme is seen as a coach capable of blending European coaching methodologies with the realities of African football, which could be a key advantage for the Mena.
The Nigerien Football Federation is optimistic about this new appointment. With a respected coach now at the helm, the Mena will head into the qualifiers with renewed focus and strategic direction. The coming matches against Ivory Coast and Madagascar will serve as an early test of Wallemme’s philosophy, approach, and ability to quickly integrate with the squad.
As Niger looks forward to these critical fixtures, all eyes will be on Jean-Guy Wallemme to see whether he can guide the Mena through a successful start in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. His experience, versatility, and tactical insight will be instrumental in shaping the team’s prospects on the continental stage.
