Jong AZ suffered a frustrating 3-2 home defeat to MVV Maastricht in an Eerste Divisie Round 17 thriller at the AFAS Trainingscomplex on Monday night.
The game started brightly for Jong AZ, with Jayen Gerold breaking the deadlock in the 17th minute, finishing clinically from a Lequincio Zeefuik through ball. However, MVV’s Camil Mmaee turned the match on its head with a devastating hat-trick. He equalized in the 22nd minute, tapped in a second at the 29th, and completed his treble with a tidy finish in the 55th minute.
Despite dominating possession (64%) and creating 19 total shots, Jong AZ struggled to convert opportunities. But their persistence paid off late, as Dutch-born Ghanaian winger Jayden Addai scored a stunning goal in the 83rd minute, smashing home from outside the box after a swift counter led by Ro-Zangelo Daal.
While Addai’s brilliance offered a glimmer of hope, Jong AZ couldn’t find the equalizer. They will aim to bounce back against FC Volendam on December 6.
This defeat maintains MVV’s narrow edge in their head-to-head record, now standing at seven wins to Jong AZ’s five.
