Jayden Adams was honoured during Monday night’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, just weeks after the Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Adams passed away soon after playing at the tournament, which was hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada. His reported death prompted shock across South Africa and the international football community.
The midfielder appeared in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches against Mexico, Czechia and South Korea as Bafana Bafana advanced to the Round of 32.
His participation in the World Cup came as he represented his country on football’s biggest stage. The news of his passing, arriving so soon afterwards, led to an outpouring of grief from supporters and the wider game.
The Ballon d’Or ceremony, held to celebrate football’s leading players and achievements, paused its celebrations to remember Adams and acknowledge his contribution to the sport.
The tribute recognised both his international involvement and his career with Mamelodi Sundowns, while celebrating the life of a player whose recent appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup had brought him to a global audience.
