Javier Tebas eyes Africa expansion as LA LIGA considers historic Morocco fixtures
LALIGA president Javier Tebas has suggested that the Spanish top flight could stage some of its matches in Africa, with Morocco emerging as a possible destination for future games.
The proposal follows last year’s controversy when the league explored the idea of moving a high-profile fixture between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid to the United States, a plan that was ultimately dropped after widespread criticism.
Tebas now appears to be revisiting the concept of international fixtures, this time closer to home, pointing to North Africa as a more practical option.
“Yes, given the number of supporters who follow the Spanish league in Morocco, I think it would be easier to play in Morocco, especially because the logistical constraints linked to travel are minimal,” the league chief explained, as per Goal.
“We could also consider a match in the new Casablanca stadium. Why not?”
Morocco’s growing football profile and its role as a co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal could further strengthen the case for such a move, should LALIGA push ahead with its expansion plans.
