Javier Tebas calls Real Madrid ‘Spain’s most rebellious team’ in Super League warning
La Liga president Javier Tebas has renewed his criticism of Real Madrid and club president Florentino Perez, warning that the Super League project could return in a different form.
Speaking at the first National Conference for Press and Sport in Galicia, Tebas described Real Madrid as “the most rebellious team in Spain”, highlighting the club’s differing vision for the future of football compared with the model supported by La Liga.
His comments were reported by French website Foot Mercato, which said Tebas used the event to launch a fresh attack on Real Madrid and the plans for a European Super League.
Tebas said the fact that the project had been halted in its current form did not mean the idea had disappeared. He warned that failing to respond could lead to a divided football structure.
“If we do not act, we will face a two-tier football system,” Tebas said.
The La Liga president argued that the balance of European football depended on preserving the existing model, in which the biggest clubs continue to operate alongside smaller teams within the same structure.
“We have built exceptional football over the past 20 years, and we must defend it. We cannot allow it to be lost,” he said.
“In this train there are locomotives, such as Real Madrid and Barcelona, but we also need carriages.”
Tebas also defended the current system for distributing television broadcasting rights, which he considers important to maintaining the existing balance across the game.
He declined to comment on the ticket prices for the upcoming El Clasico, saying responsibility for setting those prices rests with the clubs themselves.
The dispute forms part of a wider argument over the future direction of European football, with Real Madrid’s position remaining distinct from the approach advocated by La Liga. For Tebas, the current structure must continue to accommodate both the leading clubs and those with fewer resources, rather than allowing the game to develop into separate levels.
