Jamie Carragher predicts Italy move for Egypt star Mohammed Salah
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has cast doubt over reports linking Mohamed Salah with a lucrative switch to the Saudi Pro League, insisting the Egyptian forward is far from finished at the highest level of European football.
Salah, 33, recently confirmed that he will leave Liverpool FC at the end of the current season, sparking widespread speculation over his next destination. Clubs in Saudi Arabia have long been credited with strong interest in the prolific winger, with financial packages believed to be among the most attractive in world football.
However, Carragher believes a move to the Middle East is not imminent, arguing that Salah’s mindset and elite-level ambition will keep him competing in Europe for the foreseeable future.
Speaking on The Overlap podcast, the former defender compared Salah’s mentality to that of Portuguese icon Cristiano Ronaldo, suggesting the Liverpool talisman remains driven by records, trophies, and legacy.
“I think Mo Salah, the way he’s driven like a Ronaldo, I don’t see the Saudi thing just yet,” Carragher said. “I can see him in Italy with one of the giants. I just think your career’s over when you go there [Saudi Arabia].”
Carragher added that Salah is unlikely to walk away from top-tier competition while he still considers himself among the world’s elite players. Instead, he expects the Egyptian to continue chasing milestones in Europe’s premier competitions, particularly the UEFA Champions League.
“I think he’ll still be looking at his Champions League record or how many goals he can get,” he continued. “I still think he thinks, ‘I’m still one of the best players, and me leaving now is not the end of my top-level career, I’ve still got something to give.’”
Salah has enjoyed a glittering spell at Liverpool since joining from AS Roma in 2017, winning multiple domestic and international honours, including the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League. His consistency in front of goal and influence in big matches have cemented his status as one of the greatest players in the club’s history.
With his departure from Anfield looming, attention will now turn to where Salah takes his talents next. While the financial lure of Saudi Arabia remains strong, Carragher’s comments suggest the Egyptian superstar may yet have unfinished business on Europe’s biggest stage.
