Jamie Carragher backs Liverpool’s decision to part ways with Mohamed Salah

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes the club made the right financial decision by allowing Mohamed Salah to leave Anfield, pointing to the Egyptian forward’s huge salary as a major factor.

Salah ended his long and successful spell with Liverpool earlier this year after the club confirmed his departure following a remarkable career on Merseyside.

The Egyptian enjoyed a trophy-laden period with the Reds, winning nine major honours, including two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

Following his departure from Liverpool, Salah attracted interest from several clubs, with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad and teams in Major League Soccer reportedly exploring the possibility of signing the veteran forward.

However, the 34-year-old eventually decided on a move to Turkey, joining Trabzonspor on a two-year contract reportedly worth €17 million per year, including bonuses. The agreement also reportedly includes a percentage of shirt sales for the Egyptian star.

Speaking to Yalla Kora, Carragher reflected on Salah’s departure and explained why he believes Liverpool could benefit from the decision.

“Salah leaving Liverpool is good for the club in order to save on his huge salary,” Carragher said.

The former Liverpool defender highlighted the financial commitment involved in keeping the Egyptian at Anfield, noting that Salah was earning close to £400,000 per week.

Salah received the substantial salary after Liverpool renewed his contract in 2025, with the new agreement initially expected to keep him at the club for two more seasons.

However, the two parties eventually reached an agreement that brought his Liverpool career to an end after just one additional season.

Despite Salah’s departure marking the end of an era at Anfield, Carragher believes the financial flexibility created by his exit could allow Liverpool to invest in other areas of the squad as they look to build for the future.

Salah leaves Liverpool as one of the most successful players in the club’s recent history, having played a key role in the Reds’ domestic and European successes during his time at Anfield.
