James Rodriguez retires from international football with Colombia

James Rodriguez has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his Colombia career after 131 appearances for Los Cafeteros.

The 35-year-old Atletico Nacional midfielder made his international debut in 2011 and went on to become the most-capped player in Colombia’s history.

“Now is the moment,” Rodriguez wrote on his account.

“Thank you for every match, every joy, every tear and every dream we shared.

“Defending the colours of the Colombian national team was one of the greatest honours of my life.

“Thank you, Colombia. Forever.”

Rodriguez is also Colombia’s second-highest goalscorer, with 31 goals. Only Radamel Falcao has scored more for the national team, with 36.

He played a part in Colombia qualifying for the 2014, 2018 and 2026 World Cups. His most significant tournament came at the 2014 World Cup, where he led his country to the quarter-finals – Colombia’s best result in the competition – and finished as the tournament’s leading scorer.

Rodriguez also collected individual recognition at the 2014 World Cup after his goal against Uruguay in the last 16 was named FIFA’s best goal of the year.

At the Copa America, he helped Colombia finish third in 2016 before they were runners-up in 2024. Rodriguez was named the best player of the tournament in the 2024 edition.
