Former Raja Casablanca coach Jamal Sellami linked with Wydad job

Former Raja Casablanca and Jordan coach Jamal Sellami has emerged as a leading candidate to take charge of Wydad Casablanca if Portuguese coach Paulo Sergio is dismissed following a difficult start to the Botola Pro season.

According to Moroccan newspaper Al-Sabah, Wydad have begun considering possible replacements for Sergio, with Sellami reportedly at the top of their list.

Sergio came under pressure after Wydad suffered defeat by Wydad Temara in the opening round of the Moroccan league, prompting calls from sections of the club’s board and supporters for a change in the dugout.

Sellami previously held talks with Wydad

Al-Sabah reported that Wydad had already considered Sellami before appointing Sergio, but a deal was not reached because of the Moroccan coach’s financial demands.

The newspaper reported: “The Wydad office has begun studying the available options, with Salami being the first, noting that he negotiated with the Red team before signing with Paulo, but financial demands prevented the signing with him.”

Sellami has an extensive coaching background in Moroccan football, having managed Fath Union Sport, Raja Casablanca, Difaa El Jadida and Hassania Agadir.

He has also worked with Morocco’s youth and junior national teams and served as an assistant to the senior national coach in 2009.

Jordan success strengthens Sellami’s credentials

Sellami most recently managed the Jordan national team, guiding the side to a historic World Cup appearance.

His time with Jordan adds to a coaching career that has included significant domestic and international experience, making him a potential option for Wydad if the club decides to part ways with Sergio.

Sellami also has a strong connection with Moroccan football through his previous spell at Raja, where he was involved in one of the most memorable recent Arab derbies against Wydad.

He was in charge when Raja produced a dramatic comeback against their Casablanca rivals to reach the semi-finals of the Mohammed VI Champions Cup after a thrilling 4-4 draw.

Sergio given chance to respond

Sergio’s position has become increasingly uncertain following the defeat by Wydad Temara in the opening round of the Botola Pro.

The result led to criticism from supporters and some members of the Wydad board, with calls for the Portuguese coach to leave the club.

However, Sergio has been given another opportunity to improve the team’s fortunes when Wydad face Difaa El Jadida in the second round next Saturday.

The outcome of that match could therefore prove important for Sergio as pressure mounts and Wydad consider possible alternatives, with Sellami reportedly their leading option.
