Jamal Musiala health update awaited after Bayern Munich midfielder collapses against RB Leipzig

Jamal Musiala’s sudden collapse has overshadowed Bayern Munich’s 3-1 victory over RB Leipzig, with the club monitoring the 23-year-old after he became unwell only 15 minutes after coming on as a substitute.

Musiala went down in the 84th minute without any contact with an opposing player. His Bayern Munich team-mates and Leipzig players immediately gathered around him and called for medical assistance, creating worrying scenes inside the stadium.

An emergency doctor who had been sitting near the corner flag ran on to the pitch, followed shortly afterwards by paramedics carrying a stretcher. Bayern’s medical staff moved quickly to help Musiala as a large group of players stood nearby.

Ismael Saibari supported Musiala’s head, while physiotherapist Gerry Hoffmann placed a damp sponge around his neck. Alphonso Davies loosened his team-mate’s boot as the medical team worked to assess him.

Relief spread through the stadium when one of the paramedics gave a thumbs-up, indicating that Musiala’s condition had begun to improve. He was eventually able to stand and leave the pitch, although he appeared slightly unsteady as he walked towards the dressing rooms alongside Hoffmann and team doctor Dr Jochen Hahne.

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl said after the match: “The most important thing is that he is fine. There is nothing to say about anything else.”

According to German newspaper Bild, Musiala experienced a sudden spell of dizziness while on the pitch. The report suggested the high temperature, which was around 33C, may have had a significant effect and could have contributed to circulation problems.

The fact that Musiala had been on the pitch for only 15 minutes has led to further questions about the episode. Initial indications do not point to a serious problem, but Bayern Munich are continuing to follow his condition closely.

The incident also comes during a difficult period in Musiala’s recovery from a serious injury sustained on 5 July 2025 during the Club World Cup. That injury included a fracture of the fibula, and he has since struggled to regain the physical and technical level he displayed before being sidelined.

Musiala celebrated his return to competitive football on 17 January after several months away, but later experienced further ankle problems. His progress towards full fitness was consequently delayed again.

After an underwhelming appearance at a major international tournament, Musiala underwent surgery to remove a metal plate from his left foot. He missed Bayern’s training camps at Tegernsee and in Asia, instead following a rehabilitation programme and completing individual sessions. Much of his summer holiday was sacrificed as he worked to rebuild his fitness.

The midfielder returned to full team training last Monday in an attempt to begin a fresh phase of preparation for the coming season. His collapse against Leipzig, however, has revived concerns over whether he has fully recovered.

Musiala is expected to return to training within the next few days, although the effect of the incident on his preparation remains to be established.

He said several weeks ago: “Although it is sometimes difficult, I have learned a lot this year.”

Bayern will hope the episode was a temporary reaction to fatigue and the heat. The club’s priority now is to determine whether Musiala can put his injury problems behind him and return to the level that made him one of European football’s leading young players.
