In a major reinforcement ahead of the new season, Ivorian champions Séwé Sport de San Pedro have completed the signing of veteran midfielder Venance Zézé, better known as Zézéto. The former Ivory Coast international returns home after a 14-year career across Europe, notably in Belgium, Ukraine, and Finland.
Zézéto, now 33, had been widely tipped to rejoin his boyhood club ASEC Mimosas. However, he ultimately opted for Séwé Sport, reportedly swayed by the club’s ambitious sporting project.
“Beyond the sporting challenge, there’s a project we share,” said Séwé Sport president Eugène Diomandé in an interview with Sport-Ivoire.ci. “We are thankful to ASEC for having trained such a talent, but on the negotiation table, we showed more determination.”
Despite questions about his age, the club is confident Zézéto still has much to offer.
“He’s not here for a pre-retirement tour,” Diomandé added. “I’ve seen his recent performances, and he’s still highly competitive. With his level of discipline and physical upkeep, he has three to four good years left.”
Zézéto’s addition brings both experience and leadership to Séwé’s midfield as they prepare to defend their domestic title and make a mark on the continental stage. Known for his vision, ball control, and composure, Zézéto is expected to play a pivotal role in guiding a relatively young squad through a demanding season.
For Séwé Sport, this signing is not just about bolstering the squad, but also sending a message of intent. With rivals strengthening as well, the club’s acquisition of a player of Zézéto’s pedigree underlines their commitment to maintaining their position at the top of Ivorian football.
The coming weeks will reveal just how much of an impact the seasoned playmaker can make. But one thing is certain — Séwé Sport have secured a valuable asset both on and off the pitch.
