Ivory Coast seek World Cup return as they host Kenya in decisive qualifier
Ivory Coast will host Kenya on Tuesday evening at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan, aiming to secure their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with victory in their final qualifying match.
The game kicks off at 7 p.m. local time (GMT), corresponding to 9 p.m. in France.
Supporters in Ivory Coast can follow the action live on NCI or La 3, both broadcasting the encounter in full.
Ivory Coast on the brink
The Elephants currently sit at the top of their qualifying group, holding a narrow one-point lead over Gabon, who occupy the play-off position.
A win against Kenya would guarantee Ivory Coast a direct ticket to the World Cup — their first appearance since Brazil 2014.
However, failure to secure all three points could leave their fate in the hands of others.
If Ivory Coast were to draw or lose, they would have to hope Gabon slip up at home against Burundi, who are currently second from bottom.
Given Gabon’s strong home form, that scenario appears unlikely, making Tuesday’s clash a must-win for Emerse Faé’s side.
Kenya looking to spoil the party
Kenya may already be out of contention, but the Harambee Stars have shown their ability to frustrate stronger opponents.
In the reverse fixture on 11 June 2024, they held Ivory Coast to a goalless draw, showcasing their defensive discipline and resilience.
Coach Engin Firat’s side will once again be determined to cause an upset, ending their campaign on a high note by denying one of Africa’s top teams a straightforward path to qualification.
With key players returning to the starting line-up after being rested in the 7-0 victory over Seychelles, Kenya are expected to field a full-strength squad.
Team selection and changes
On the Ivorian side, several changes are expected to the starting eleven.
Nicolas Pépé and Evan Ndicka have been rested, while Simon Adingra and Franck Kessié are likely to begin on the bench.
In goal, Yahia Fofana could return between the posts, replacing Alban Lafont, who made his first international appearance last week.
Despite these rotations, Ivory Coast’s depth and home advantage make them clear favourites.
A packed stadium in Abidjan will be hoping to witness their national team’s long-awaited return to the world’s biggest stage.
Victory would seal qualification outright, while any slip could open the door for Gabon — leaving the Elephants dependent on results elsewhere.
