Ivory Coast: Reassuring News for Serge Aurier Ahead of DR Congo Clash
There’s relief in the Ivorian camp as Serge Aurier appears on track to feature in the Ivory Coast’s crucial match against DR Congo this Wednesday, in the 4th day of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Paris Saint-Germain right-back sparked concern after being stretchered off during the Elephants’ 2-1 win over Congo last Saturday. The injury, described as a crutch to the buttock, initially raised doubts about his availability. However, coach Hervé Renard has offered reassurances.
“Serge Aurier suffered a crutch in the buttock. It is very painful but in 48 hours, it will be a bad memory. And I think there is no problem,” said Renard via the Ivorian Football Federation’s official website.
Aurier himself, while still in some discomfort, is optimistic:
“I’m trying to get better so I can get back on my feet as quickly as possible. But I’m still feeling some pain… The most important thing is to be ready on Wednesday. If I’m not, the coach will know—I won’t cheat,” he told Sport-Ivoire.
The 21-year-old has had a rough ride with injuries during this qualifying campaign—he was also sidelined during the 4-1 defeat to Cameroon on matchday two. Despite the setbacks, Aurier remains determined, viewing the experience as part of the growth process in African football.
Should he be deemed unfit for Wednesday’s showdown, Aurier is expected to recover in time for Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 fixture against Lens later in the week.
