Ivory Coast: Nicolas Pépé addresses controversy over Morocco remarks
Ivory Coast winger Nicolas Pépé has spoken out after his comments about Morocco during a lighthearted video went viral, sparking criticism and racist abuse on social media.
The Villarreal star clarified the context, defended himself, and condemned the hateful messages directed at him.
The controversy stems from a clip recorded with French-Algerian influencer Just Riadh. In the playful exchange, Pépé referenced African football records, noting Ivory Coast’s three Africa Cup of Nations titles compared with Algeria’s two.
He then jokingly teased Morocco, saying: “How many stars do they have? One? They must have won that in 1818, my father wasn’t even born yet.”
Pépé emphasizes that the remarks were made in a joking context. “We’d been teasing each other all day, making jokes about everyone,” he explained.
However, social media users misinterpreted the clip, and Moroccan fans launched personal and racist attacks, including degrading emojis. The winger shared screenshots of the abusive messages, urging followers: “Stay strong, racism has no place here.”
In a more detailed statement, Pépé clarified the intent of the video and expressed regret for any offense.
“I’m addressing the controversy surrounding my video with Just Riadh. We were just joking around, teasing each other all day, making jokes about everyone.
I’m sorry if my words were misinterpreted by Moroccan fans. In the video, before my comment, I emphasize how difficult it will be to face them during this AFCON.”
Pépé concluded by stressing the importance of unity in African football and taking a firm stance against racism: “We are all in this together. Strength to all, and f*** racism.”
The incident underscores the sensitivity surrounding social media remarks by players, particularly ahead of major tournaments like the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Pépé’s clarification aims to shift focus back to football while addressing the persistent issue of online abuse.
