Abidjan has taken center stage as the global capital of Taekwondo, hosting the first World Cup of the discipline in Africa until November 30. The prestigious event is set to take place at the Palais des Sports in Treichville, with 15 countries participating. The draw for the tournament, which occurred on Tuesday, revealed the following groupings:
Men’s Groups:
- Group A: Mexico, China, France, Spain
- Group B: Russia, Gabon (featuring champion Anthony Obame), Burkina Faso, United States
- Group C: Korea, DR Congo, Senegal
- Group D: Ivory Coast (organizing country), Nigeria, Brazil
Women’s Groups:
- Group A: Korea, Ivory Coast, Spain, United States
- Group B: Russia, France, Mali, China
In a significant development, the Ivorian State laid the foundation stone for the sports palace in Adjamé on Wednesday, coinciding with the opening of the Taekwondo World Cup. Alain Lobognon, the Minister of Sports, announced a financial commitment of 100 million FCFA for the construction of the Taekwondo palace, marking a milestone in the development of sports infrastructure in the region.
