Ivory Coast: Domenech Expresses Interest in Coaching the Elephants

Raymond Domenech Emerges as Candidate for Ivory Coast Coaching Role

Former France national team manager Raymond Domenech has reportedly thrown his hat into the ring to become the next head coach of the Ivory Coast national team, according to information from Afrik-Foot.

Following the departure of Sabri Lamouchi, whose contract expired after a disappointing 2014 World Cup campaign, the Ivorian Football Federation is seeking a new figure to lead the Elephants into the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to be held in Morocco this coming January.

Domenech, now 62, is remembered for his turbulent spell in charge of Les Bleus, highlighted by a dramatic run to the 2006 World Cup final in Germany, where France lost on penalties to Italy. However, his tenure ended in controversy and disarray after the team’s infamous group-stage exit at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, marred by internal conflict and public backlash.

Despite turning down a recent offer from the Tunisian national team, Domenech appears to be open to a return to international management, and has formally submitted his candidacy to the Ivorian FA. If chosen, he would succeed fellow Frenchman Hervé Renard, who led Zambia to a surprise AFCON victory in 2012 and was also linked to the post.

The Ivorian national team remains one of Africa’s most talented squads, boasting a roster filled with players who feature regularly in top European leagues. However, their recent international outings have fallen short of expectations, and the team is under pressure to make a strong showing at the next continental tournament.

Domenech’s potential appointment would mark his first managerial role since leaving the France national team in 2010. While he remains a polarising figure in French football, his experience at the highest level could appeal to Ivorian officials hoping to stabilise and elevate the national side after recent setbacks.

A decision from the Ivorian Football Federation is expected in the coming weeks, as preparations intensify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
