Didier Drogba: No Decision Yet on Ivory Coast Future Despite World Cup Exit
Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba has made it clear that he has not yet decided whether to retire from international football following the team’s early exit from the 2014 World Cup.
Speaking after the Elephants’ disappointing first-round elimination at the hands of Greece on Tuesday, the Galatasaray striker said he needed time to process the defeat before making any decisions about his future with the national team.
“I haven’t made a decision yet about my future with the national team,” Drogba said. “I have to digest this elimination first, then we’ll look a little further. Maybe I’ll participate in the Africa Cup of Nations next year, we’ll see.”
Drogba’s World Cup campaign was far from straightforward. The veteran, who boasts over 100 caps, was used mainly as a substitute in Ivory Coast’s opening matches against Japan and Colombia before finally starting in the final group game versus Greece. Despite his efforts, he failed to find the net, and his diminished role has left him facing a new and unwelcome status within the squad.
