Ivory Coast to Face Angola Amid Squad Changes, New Faces Emerge
Ivory Coast is set to take on Angola this Thursday in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match. The Elephants will be without several key players due to injuries and recent retirements, providing an opportunity for fresh talent to step into the spotlight under coach Hervé Renard.
Among the newcomers is defender Déli Simon, currently with Slavia Prague. Speaking to sport-ivoire.ci, Simon expressed his surprise and excitement at receiving the call-up. “Honestly, I did not expect to be called up now. I had success at youth levels, which gave me confidence, but this came as a surprise—a nice surprise. I’m happy about it,” he said.
Acknowledging the pressure of breaking into a strong squad, Simon remains focused. “A challenger must always be ready. Even though I wasn’t expecting it, I have to fight to earn my place,” he added.
Eager to make his debut alongside star captain Yaya Touré, Simon said, “I can’t wait to get started. But ultimately, the choice is up to the coach. For a footballer, stress is minimal when you love the game.”
As Ivory Coast integrates new players like Simon, Hervé Renard’s squad looks to maintain its competitive edge in this crucial qualifying campaign.
