Ivory Coast has taken a significant step toward securing a spot in the 2014 World Cup after a convincing 3-1 victory against Senegal in the first leg of the play-offs held in Abidjan on Saturday.
Didier Drogba, scoring from the penalty spot, notched his 5th goal in four matches across all competitions. Gervinho, in the first quarter of an hour, pressured Sané into a foul, resulting in an own goal.
In the second half, Salomon Kalou added a third goal for the Elephants. Despite Senegal managing to reduce the score with a late goal from Papiss Cisse, Ivory Coast’s performance puts them in a strong position ahead of the return match. The Elephants are now on the brink of securing their place in the 2014 World Cup.
