Ivory Coast 2-0 Ghana: Elephants hand Black Stars losing start to AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign

Ghana’s Black Stars have suffered a disappointing start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign after losing 2-0 to Ivory Coast in their opening Group C encounter.

The Black Stars travelled into the fixture hoping to begin their qualification journey with a positive result, but the Elephants proved too strong on the day, securing victory through goals from Malick Junior Yalcouye and Franck Kessie.

Ivory Coast made a bright start to the game and looked dangerous in possession as they sought to put Ghana under pressure from the opening exchanges.

Their attacking pressure eventually paid off in the first half when Yalcouye found the breakthrough to put the hosts ahead.

The goal gave Ivory Coast greater confidence as they continued to control important periods of the first half, while Ghana struggled to produce the decisive response needed to restore parity.

The Black Stars went into the interval trailing by a goal and were faced with the task of finding a way back into the contest after the restart.

Ghana returned for the second half with the intention of changing the momentum of the game and searching for an equaliser.

However, Ivory Coast remained disciplined and continued to threaten whenever they moved forward.

The hosts were subsequently awarded a penalty, presenting Kessie with the opportunity to double their advantage.

The experienced midfielder kept his composure from the spot and converted the penalty to make it 2-0, leaving Ghana with a mountain to climb in the closing stages.

With a two-goal cushion, Ivory Coast managed the remainder of the match effectively and frustrated Ghana’s attempts to get back into the game.

The Black Stars pushed forward in search of a lifeline but could not find a breakthrough as the Elephants maintained their advantage until the final whistle

Yalcouye’s first-half strike and Kessie’s second-half penalty were ultimately enough to give Ivory Coast all three points and ensure a winning start to their Group C campaign.

For Ghana, the defeat represents a setback at the beginning of their quest to qualify for the 2027 AFCON. The Black Stars will now have to regroup and respond in their next qualifier against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 27, 2026.

Ivory Coast, meanwhile, will take confidence from the victory as they begin their qualifying campaign with three points and a clean sheet.
