Ivorian striker Sébastien Haller admits frustration over goal drought at FC Utrecht
Sébastien Haller has opened up about his struggles in front of goal, admitting that his lack of scoring form since joining FC Utrecht has left him frustrated and searching for answers.
The Ivorian striker, who rejoined Utrecht this summer with hopes of reviving his career, has failed to find the net in thirteen appearances so far this season.
Speaking candidly to Voetbal International, the 30-year-old acknowledged the emotional toll of his barren spell but maintained that circumstances on the pitch have contributed to his difficulties.
“Not scoring is frustrating. Especially because I feel it’s not entirely my fault. If it were, I would accept it more easily. Sometimes, as a striker, you go through a period like this,” Haller said.
His remarks come as Utrecht endure a poor run of form, having won only one of their last nine matches and scoring just six goals in that period.
The club’s attacking struggles have mirrored Haller’s own, with the forward often forced to drop deep rather than operate in the penalty area where he is most effective.
“I play much deeper on the pitch because we are not dominating the games, he explained. I have played in dominant teams, and in that case, I occupied a higher position. Now that I am deeper, I am less able to play at my best level.”
Despite his personal frustrations, Haller remains determined to show leadership within the squad, even as results and performances falter.
The Ivorian emphasised that communication and attitude on the pitch are just as crucial as goals.
“I know I need to communicate more and sometimes take on a more directive role, he said. It’s easier when you’re playing well yourself; then you have more legitimacy to speak up. Precisely because of my position, I have to talk more, even when I’m not scoring and not playing well. Because it benefits the team.”
Haller’s words reflect the mentality of a player accustomed to higher standards.
Having previously excelled in Germany with Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund, as well as in the Netherlands with Ajax, the striker’s return to Utrecht was expected to mark a new chapter of consistency and influence.
While the goals have yet to come, Haller’s willingness to shoulder responsibility amid adversity may prove vital to Utrecht’s resurgence as the season progresses.
For now, the Ivorian remains determined to rediscover his rhythm and help his side climb back up the Eredivisie table.
