Ivorian striker Datro Fofana nets quickfire brace in Karagümrük’s defeat to Trabzonspor

David Datro Fofana produced a remarkable late cameo on Saturday night, scoring twice in stoppage time for Fatih Karagümrük despite a 4-3 home defeat to Trabzonspor on matchday seven of the Turkish Süper Lig.

The Ivorian striker, currently on loan from Chelsea, was introduced in the 66th minute and transformed the closing stages of the game with his explosive impact.

Fofana struck his first in the 90th minute plus one before immediately adding a second a minute later, igniting hopes of a sensational comeback.

However, the home side ran out of time, falling narrowly short after a chaotic finale.

It was a bittersweet evening for the 21-year-old, who has now scored three goals in just two Süper Lig appearances for Karagümrük.

His brace underscored both his instinctive finishing and his potential to revive his career after a frustrating spell in England.

Fofana’s movement, energy and clinical edge gave Trabzonspor’s defence no respite, and his composure in front of goal provided a glimpse of why Chelsea signed him from Molde in 2023.

Karagümrük had trailed for most of the match as Trabzonspor’s experience and efficiency in attack proved decisive.

The visitors’ ability to capitalise on defensive lapses left the home side with an uphill battle.

Yet Fofana’s arrival injected fresh momentum, lifting the crowd and his teammates as the hosts mounted a desperate late surge.

Speaking ahead of the season, Karagümrük sporting director Eric Babou described the move as a pivotal chance for the forward.

This transfer to Fatih truly represents an opportunity to relaunch ourselves, Babou said, emphasising the club’s belief in Fofana’s ability to rediscover the form that made him one of Europe’s most coveted young strikers.

Despite the defeat, Fofana’s display was a major talking point in Turkey.

His double not only demonstrated his scoring instincts but also signalled his growing adaptation to the Süper Lig.

With his speed, strength and sharpness in the penalty area, the Ivorian has quickly become a key figure in Karagümrük’s attacking plans.

For Trabzonspor, the victory reinforced their strong start to the campaign, but Fofana’s late heroics ensured they left Istanbul knowing they had been pushed to the limit.

Karagümrük, meanwhile, will take heart from their young striker’s form as they look to convert his goals into crucial points in the weeks ahead.
