Ivorian midfielder Seko Fofana restored to Rennes squad for Strasbourg clash

Seko Fofana has been recalled to the Stade Rennais squad for Sunday’s Ligue 1 encounter against RC Strasbourg, following his surprise omission from the midweek draw away to Toulouse.

The Ivorian midfielder, a pivotal figure in Rennes’ setup this season, was left out of the 2-2 draw at the Stadium de Toulouse for what coach Habib Beye described as sporting reasons.

The decision, which also saw Ludovic Blas excluded from the travelling group, sparked widespread debate among supporters and pundits about squad rotation and player management.

Beye has now brought both players back into contention for the home fixture at Roazhon Park, signalling a desire to inject renewed energy and leadership into the side.

Fofana’s return, in particular, will be viewed as a significant boost for the hosts, who have shown defensive and transitional frailties in recent matches.

Since joining Rennes, Fofana has become an essential part of the team’s midfield structure, blending physical presence with technical poise.

With nine league appearances and one goal to his name this season, his ability to dictate tempo and drive play from deep positions has been central to Rennes’ ambitions.

Against Toulouse, Rennes struggled to maintain control in midfield and were twice pegged back, exposing gaps that Fofana’s dynamism often helps to close.

His reintroduction is expected to restore balance and stability, qualities that could prove vital as Rennes aim to return to winning ways.

Speaking ahead of the weekend fixture, club insiders hinted that Fofana’s brief exclusion was part of a broader strategy to keep players fresh during a demanding run of fixtures rather than a disciplinary measure.

The 29-year-old, known for his professionalism and influence on and off the pitch, is expected to slot straight back into the starting lineup.

Rennes will, however, be without defender Alidu Seidu, who has been ruled out after contracting a virus. His absence further limits Beye’s defensive options, already stretched by recent injuries.

With the team sitting mid-table and seeking consistency, Sunday’s meeting with Strasbourg carries added importance.

The return of Fofana — a player capable of turning control into momentum — could be the spark Rennes need to reassert their authority and push higher up the Ligue 1 standings.
