Ivorian football mourns the loss of former international Souleymane Bamba at 39
Former Ivory Coast international and Adanaspor coach Souleymane “Sol” Bamba has tragically passed away at the age of 39. The ex-defender, known for his resilience on and off the field, succumbed to illness shortly before his team’s away match against Manisa BBSK. Despite being rushed to Manisa Celal Bayar University Hospital, Bamba could not be saved.
Bamba’s untimely death came as a shock to the football community, particularly given his remarkable recovery from lymphoma just a few years ago.
After battling and overcoming the disease, he made an inspiring return to football, finishing his playing career at Middlesbrough in 2022.
His playing career was marked by notable stints at clubs across Europe, including Leicester City, Leeds United, Cardiff City, and Trabzonspor.
Renowned for his defensive prowess and leadership, Bamba earned the respect of teammates and fans alike.
After hanging up his boots, he transitioned into coaching, initially serving as an assistant coach at Cardiff City, where he had previously made a significant impact as a player.
Bamba’s coaching journey took him to Turkey, where he was appointed head coach of Adanaspor at the start of the season.
His leadership and experience were expected to guide the team through a challenging campaign. Tragically, his tenure was cut short by his sudden passing.
In a statement released by Adanaspor, the club expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their coach: “Our coach Souleymane Bamba, who fell ill before the Manisa Football Club match played yesterday, was taken to Manisa Celal Bayar University Hospital and unfortunately lost his battle for life there. Our condolences to our community, especially to his family.”
Bamba’s death marks a profound loss for the football world, particularly in Ivory Coast, where he was admired for his dedication and courage.
He earned 46 caps for the national team, representing his country with pride in multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
As the news of his passing spreads, tributes have poured in from across the globe, with former teammates, coaches, and fans remembering Bamba not only as a talented footballer but also as an inspirational figure who faced adversity with dignity and strength.
Bamba leaves behind a legacy of resilience and passion, and his contributions to football, both as a player and a coach, will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
